Where Did Tapioca Pearls Originate?
Tapioca pearls originated as a cheaper alternative to sago in Southeast Asian cuisine. They are made from tapioca starch, which comes from the roots of the cassava plant. Cassava was introduced to Taiwan from South America during Japanese colonial rule. The pearls quickly gained popularity and spread worldwide, especially when used in bubble tea. In Taiwan, they are often referred to as “pearls” or “boba.” These chewy, flavourful pearls have become an iconic part of bubble tea culture, delighting taste buds across the globe!
How to Cook Tapioca Pearls for Bubble Tea
Tapioca pearls, also known as “boba,” are an essential ingredient in bubble tea. These chewy, translucent spheres add texture and sweetness to the popular drink. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to cook tapioca pearls at home:
Materials Needed:
- 1/2 Cup of Tapioca Pearls (BUY HERE)
- 4 Cups of Water

Instructions:
- Gather Ingredients and Materials:
- Begin by organizing all your ingredients and materials. Having everything ready will make the process smoother.
- Start Boiling Water in a Large Pot:
- Fill a large pot with 4 cups of water.
- Use a big pot to prevent boiling over and ensure enough room for the tapioca pearls.
- Add Tapioca Pearls to Boiling Water:
- Once the water is boiling, add the tapioca pearls.
- Stir gently to prevent sticking.
- Stir to Avoid Sticking:
- Keep stirring occasionally to prevent the pearls from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
- Cook the pearls for about 20 minutes on high heat with the lid on.
- Prepare the Ice Bath:
- While the pearls are cooking, prepare an ice bath in the medium-sized bowl.
- Fill the bowl with ice water.
- Drain the Tapioca Pearls:
- Use a colander or slotted spoon to drain the cooked tapioca pearls.
- Immediately transfer them to the ice bath to stop the cooking process.
- Sweeten with Sugar Syrup:
- Once cooled, remove the pearls from the ice bath.
- Soak them in brown sugar syrup to make them sweet and chewy.
Now you have perfectly cooked tapioca pearls ready for your bubble tea! Adjust the sweetness and texture by varying the sugar syrup and enjoy your homemade boba.
